Mapper Desktop consolidates the primary tasks of the property
mapping office - splitting existing parcels, joining existing parcels,
digitally constructing new parcel geometry, updating property-related data,
and importing parcel graphics from other systems - into a collection of
intuitive workflows that help to automate common function within ESRI's
ArcMap environment while reducing the average user's reliance on advanced,
in-depth, training. Users benefit from automated GIS procedures, while
the department benefits from the reduced total cost of implementing
modern geodatabase-driven parcel maintenance techniques using staff
with very little specialized GIS training.

Mapper Desktop is a geographic information system (GIS) software tool
designed to perform advanced cadastral mapping functions. More
specifically Mapper Desktop is a customized -and customizable- extension
to ArcInfo or ArcEditor, the powerful GIS engine developed by
Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI). The basic purpose
of Mapper Desktop is to streamline cadastral map maintenance by
consolidating the tools required to perform the most
frequent cadastral data maintenance tasks.
By integrating Mapper Desktop's workflow-oriented approach to cadastral
data management, even an inexperienced mapper can quickly become
proficient in maintaining parcel maps and related data. Mapper Desktop
provides workflows that automate several common ArcMap procedures and
practices. These workflows facilitate quick and accurate edits to the
appropriate map layers and underlying data sources during cadastral map
maintenance, while also reducing the need for tax-mapping staff to also
become GIS gurus or database administrators. Smart Data Strategies designed Mapper Desktop
specifically to lower the GIS learning curve for users who are primarily
concerned with management of property maps and database attributes related
to ownership, improvements, valuation, taxation, etc., but advanced
users will also benefit from the software's simplified automation of
commonly-performed GIS procedures.
Since Mapper Desktop is an extension to ESRI's ArcMap, you will still
have full access to existing ArcMap functionality, and Smart Data Strategies
workflow-orientation does not prevent you from using native ESRI
commands. Users needing more information about mapping, generic GIS,
ESRI's ArcMap, or functionality provided in other ESRI ArcGIS products
are urged to inquire with Smart Data Strategies staff about training opportunities
available regularly from Smart Data Strategies.
NOTE: Across most disciplines, most daily uses of GIS employ customized
tools designed to perform tasks in a manner that best suits that
discipline or user or specific objective. Likewise, your Mapper
system may include custom tools. To inquire about customized tools
and their availability, please contact your Mapper administrator or
your nearest Smart Data Strategies representative.

Easy Installation and Simplified Administration
Mapper uses intuitive "wizards" to assist the administrator in software set-up and advanced topics like database linkage and theme management. The delivered online help, accessible with the click of your mouse, provides easy access to the user's guide. Additionally, Mapper provides access to GIS-level commands through a scripting language to let advanced users add customized functionality.
