Washington State Department of Transportation Goes Live with DREAMaps Right-of-Way Management System by SDS, Inc.

July 2008: Smart Data Strategies, Inc., a leading provider of GIS software products and services for local, state, and federal government agencies, announces the official launch of the Washington State Department of Transportation’s web-based Right-of-Way Management System. The system, known as the Integrated Realty Information Service (IRIS) replaces the legacy system that was originally developed in-house. Smart Data Strategies configured its commercial-off-the-shelf software suite, DREAMaps™, to standardize the land acquisition process and integrate external systems for advanced management workflow and reporting capabilities. The system offers real-time information with scheduling and asset reporting while also providing project creation tools. Another key component is the integration of IRIS with WSDOT’s financial management system providing daily updates of financial status for reporting and management purposes. The new system will allow WSDOT to better manage property acquisitions, financial data, and project/property costs.
As with many departments of transportation, the need for accessibility among a large base of users was essential. Providing easy access for approximately 150 users across the state was certainly a top priority. It was obvious that a web-based platform was necessary to utilize the latest technologies while eliminating the complications of multi-departmental system and software updates. With this increased accessibility, dissemination of guidelines and standard practices for all agency offices involved in the real estate activities has been simplified.
WSDOT is evaluating the feasibility of GIS integration to further advance their capabilities. The addition of GIS will provide WSDOT with complete project management, allowing properties affected by an acquisition to be easily located and displayed on a map for estimation. With detailed parcel data, document linking and right-of-way buffering, advanced cost estimations may be performed.
